Personal defense equipment is becoming increasingly popular as many of us look for ways to keep safe during our outdoor walks and activities. Sadly, assaults on women and vulnerable individuals are a common occurrence.

Personal Safety Alarms are a very affordable and extremely effective device that can be used by all ages and abilities. They are small and lightweight electronic devices that let off a loud alarm to draw attention to yourself and deter your attacker if you’re under threat. They can also be used by elderly people to call for help if they are in trouble such as if they fall over at home.

Unlike many other self defense measures such as pepper sprays and stun guns, there are no restrictions in any states for personal safety alarms making them more accessible. They can also be carried on planes making it the device of choice for travellers and holiday makers.

If you’re fortunate enough to own a Personal Safety Alarm such as our alarmee Rechargeable Personal Safety Alarm then it is very important that you familiarize yourself with your device and learn how to carry and use it effectively. We’ve provided this step by step guide to using your Alarmee to help you so that you are prepared if you ever need to use it:

KEEP IT EASILY ACCESSIBLE

Always ensure that your personal safety alarm is readily available in the event you need to use it quickly. Your alarmee comes with a carabiner so that you can clip it to your waist belt, key rings or onto your purse or bag. You can also wear it around your neck if you have a lanyard if you’d prefer. Check which area would be best suited for you that would allow the easiest and fastest way to activate it. Do not store it in your pockets or at the bottom of your bag as you will not be able to reach it quickly enough.

TEST YOUR DEVICE REGULARLY

Testing your device is of paramount importance as you must be confident that your device will work during your time of need. Imagine if in your moment of need, you try and activate your device only to find it is not working because you forgot to charge it. Unlike most battery operated devices, our alarmee features a rechargeable battery with a low battery warning light so you can be confident that your device is always fully charged and ready to use without the need to replace batteries. Another important reason is that regular practice drastically improves your muscle memory so that when the time comes you can confidently and quickly activate your alarm without hesitation.

ACTIVATING THE ALARM

To activate your alarmee, simply hold the device firmly in one hand and pull on the carabiner if you have this attached or the ring at the top of the device. Removing the pin will activate the 130dB loud alarm and the LED strobe light, this will continue to ring until the pin is placed back into the device. The device is designed to continue ringing until the pin is placed back into the device so that your attacker cannot deactivate it easily in a struggle. It also makes it very unlikely to be activated accidentally as the movement needs to be very deliberate.

ACTIVATING THE LED FLASHLIGHT

Your alarmee comes with a bright dual-mode LED Flashlight with the flashing mode automatically activated when the pin is pulled to activate the alarm. This can be particularly useful to attract attention if it is dark or to reduce the visibility for the attacker allowing you to quickly slip away.

The LED flashlight can be used on its own if you need some light to make your way around in the dark whether you’re at home or elsewhere. The grey button used to activate the flashlight can be found on the back of the unit. A single press of the button will turn on the continuous light mode so that your alarmee can be used as a normal flashlight. The second press of the button will turn on the flashing light mode and the third press will switch the light off completely.

CHARGING YOUR DEVICE

Your alarmee is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which has enough charge to keep the alarm running continuously for up to 70 minutes. When the device battery is low the warning light will turn on and off 3 times signalling it is time for a recharge. When you wish to recharge your device, simply use the included USB-C charging cable and connect to any USB port on a computer or use a good quality plug adaptor to connect to a mains socket. It will take no longer than 60 minutes to fully charge your alarmee.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO CONSIDER

Your alarmee personal safety alarm should not be considered a toy and there are several safety measures you must follow to safely use your device:

  • Do not place the alarm too close to your ears or expose yourself to prolonged periods of the alarm as this could cause permanent hearing loss.
  • Do not look directly into the LED flashlight as prolonged exposure to this light could cause permanent eye sight loss.
  • Your alarmee is not waterproof and so should not be placed into any water or exposed to any water.
